Working as a virtual assistant to interior designers is the first job that I have truly loved. I feel lucky everyday to do what I do and I feel like I created a real life for myself, not just a career. I wanted to write this blog post for anyone who is curious about becoming a virtual assistant or working with one.
While living in Barcelona, I decided to do my master's in interior design, finally following my heart by choosing a creative field while also helping improve my Spanish. After graduating, my journey into the world of virtual assistance began with a desire to immerse myself further in the industry and gain valuable experience, particularly on the business side of the sector, which I felt was not covered in depth during my academic pursuits. I imagined that after a few years I would want to open my own studio and take on my own interior design projects. However, I quickly realized that I had found what I really loved to do, and not just the career, but also the lifestyle that it granted me.
Firstly, the nature of my work exposes me to a diverse array of interior designers and their unique styles. Collaborating with professionals from various backgrounds and cultures has enriched my understanding of design principles and expanded my creative horizons. Each project presents a new opportunity to learn and grow, as I adapt to different design aesthetics and contribute to the realization of distinctive visions. I feel very fortunate to have now worked with 15+ designers, all of whom have helped shaped me as a seasoned virtual interior design assistant, and something that I would not have been afforded working a more traditional job.
One of the most significant aspects of my role as a virtual interior design assistant is the autonomy it affords me. Unlike traditional employment structures, I have the flexibility to craft my own schedule, allowing me to strike a harmonious balance between work and personal life. Whether I'm working from a cafe in Barcelona or from my hometown in California, I have the freedom to choose where and when I work—an invaluable privilege that enhances both my productivity and overall well-being.
Beyond the practical advantages, what truly fuels my passion for this role is the sense of fulfillment derived from supporting interior designers in their creative endeavors. I am keenly aware of the demands and pressures inherent in the profession, having now worked with many designers who wear all of the hats for their business. Therefore, being able to alleviate some of the workload and assist in bringing designers' visions to life is immensely rewarding. Anytime I can take something off of their plate and deliver results reminds that's why I love this opportunity so much.
Saying all of that, I have definitely had to develop skills that help afford me this opportunity, as anyone does with a less traditional job. Scheduling meetings across different time zones, staying up to date with multiple projects with several designers at once, and staying proficient with a variety of programs are typical challenges that come with the job. But I am happy to tackle all of these challenges as they come, as this opportunity has so many more pros than cons.
My journey as a virtual interior assistant has been both fulfilling and enjoyable. The autonomy to manage my schedule, the freedom to work from diverse locations, and the opportunity to collaborate with a myriad of talented designers have made it a truly enriching experience. Moreover, knowing that I am contributing to the success of designers in a demanding industry adds a profound sense of purpose to my work. As I continue on this path, I am grateful for the opportunity to blend my passion for design with the flexibility and creativity afforded by virtual assistance.
